Reviews of Pennsylvania Hotel New York

Review by: Brenda from Vermont, Montpelier, United States

Stayed: Dec 2008

Customer Rating:

We have stayed here often. It isn't the fanciest of hotels, but it is lright across from Penn Station, it's all about location for us. We come in on Amtrak, step off the train, walk through Penn station, cross the street and check in. The value is great for the room. When in NYC, who spends time in the room anyway? We sleep there. It is the place we always stay. We have found that they are accomodating on late check out and offer baggage check when unavailable. On a personal note...We preferred the hotel lobby before they recently re-did it. The lobby had the look of a grand hotel before. The upgrades are nice and sleek, but we preffered the old chandeliers and the "big-band era" feel of the old lobby. It's sleek and modern now, which I guess helps appeal to a broader market.

Customer Rating:

Hotel Penn is in a great location, right outside of Pennsylvania Railroad Station in midtown.

While not one of the newer, shinier hotels, it's kept up reasonably, and some of the rooms are quite big. It's really one of those old (down to the decor and fixtures) New York Hotels.

If I can find a cheap room there, I'll take it any day, nothing particularly exciting about it, but you know it will be reasonable.

I would totally reccomend the Penn Hotel, it was clean and the location was perfect. I thought that the hotel was a great value and helped to make our New York experience that much better!

Customer Rating:

We spent over an hour in line just waiting to get checked in. After that there were issues with the elevators so only two were working so we spent another 20 minutes in line for the elevator. Once we got to the room we were aghast. The room was not only tiny but it smelled like burnt rubber and cigarettes. We were in a non smoking room. Then when we tried to open the window it would only open an inch. We tried to talk to the front desk about it but they were less than helpful. I would have rather stayed at a hostel. For almost $400/night we would have thought it would be nicer than a motor inn. We were very very wrong. I will never stay there again. Ever.

Customer Rating:

We were expecting either a queen bed or a king and got a double. The sink had drainage issues. Those were the negatives. Positives: clean, shower worked well, plenty of hot water. Wake up calls worked well. Expectations were higher than the delivery.
